Inspiring Youth Through Music: An Interview with Elisapie Issac

Elisapie, the renowned Inuit artist whose music bridges cultures and hearts, recently shared her insights with us on pursuing a career in music and the journey that led her to where she is today. In this interview, she offered valuable advice for aspiring musicians and reflected on her own experiences.

Q — What advice would you give to youth in Nunavik who want to pursue a career in music? Are there specific skills or experiences they should focus on?

When I was growing up, about 30 or 40 years ago, we didn’t have the same access to information and inspiration that youth have today. The internet now allows you to see and hear a wide array of artists and genres. That exposure can be incredibly inspiring and help you dream big. Back then, my world was smaller, and I had very little, but I used that scarcity to fuel my creativity. I was a daydreamer and would invent stories and songs in my mind. Music became a form of therapy for me.

So, my advice is to embrace your surroundings and the resources you have. If you’re passionate about music, let that passion guide you. Don’t try to copy others; instead, focus on expressing your own emotions and experiences. Understand what makes you unique and use that to shape your artistry. Engage with your community, listen to the stories around you, and let your creativity flourish from there. Your journey will be distinctively yours and that authenticity will resonate with others.

Q — How does it feel to be able to sing your songs in Inuktitut in front of large audiences?

It’s an incredibly special and often surprising experience. When I released my album in Inuktitut, I didn’t expect to connect so deeply with non-Inuit or non-Indigenous audiences. It’s like a lesson in how music can unite people. Even in France, where my audience may not understand the language, they connect with the emotion and the stories in the songs. Music has a universal language that brings people together, and that’s what makes performing so fulfilling. It’s a privilege to share our culture and stories with a wider audience and to see how it touches their lives.

Q — When you’re missing home, what do you do to reconnect with your roots and find comfort?

Missing home can be tough. For me, writing songs and creating art is a way to process and express that longing. I find comfort in making music and films, as it allows me to channel my emotions and keep a piece of home with me. I also connect the natural elements of my homeland with my art. Whether it’s through my songwriting or visual expressions, my roots are always present in my work, and that helps me feel close to home.

Q — Can you share a memorable experience from a time on stage that you cherish and would love to relive?

One of my most cherished memories is performing the song “Arnaq” for the first time at a festival in Nunavik. We were at the gymnasium, and as soon as the song started, I saw Inuit children singing along with us. This song, which speaks about respecting women and reclaiming our place, seemed to resonate deeply with these young girls. Seeing them so engaged and empowered was a profound moment. It reminded me of the impact music can have on people, especially our youth.

Q — Is there a particular part of your daily routine that you find especially rewarding or inspiring? Would you recommend incorporating this in our daily routine?

I find solace in my quiet time. Despite being surrounded by people due to my work, I need to balance that out with moments of solitude. I’ve learned that taking care of my mental and emotional health is crucial. I jog regularly, which helps me clear my mind and is a key part of my creative process. Running not only keeps me physically healthy but also provides mental clarity. It’s important to listen to your body and mind and establish boundaries to maintain your well-being. This balance is essential for anyone pursuing a demanding career.

Q — Do you have any additional advice or recommendations for youth looking to positively impact their community or pursue their dreams?

My advice is to stay true to what makes you happy and fulfilled. Whether it’s a passion for music, art or any other pursuit, embrace it wholeheartedly. Keep your mind active and curious. Question things, challenge norms, and stay engaged with your own growth. Don’t be afraid to challenge your own beliefs or the expectations of others. Curiosity and passion are powerful drivers that can lead you to amazing places and help you make a positive impact in your community.

Thank you Elisapie for sharing your wisdom and experiences. Her journey is a testament to the power of following one’s passion and staying connected to one’s roots, no matter where life leads.
